Cubaris sp. 'Panda King Orange'
Description
Cubaris sp. 'Panda King Orange' is a distinctive orange-and-white form of the popular Panda King isopod. Its warm orange, cream and white coloration gives it a very different appearance from the more familiar grey-and-white Panda King, making it an especially attractive choice for keepers and collectors.
The Panda King Orange is an active burrower that enjoys digging and spending time beneath the surface of the substrate. A well-structured enclosure with plenty of hiding places allows them to exhibit this natural behaviour. They should be provided with a soft substrate containing a mixture of leaves, soil and decaying wood, together with leaf litter, bark and moss or sphagnum.
The substrate should be kept moist but not waterlogged. Good humidity is important for this species, with a relative humidity of around 70–80% recommended. Good ventilation should also be maintained to prevent stagnant conditions. They become particularly active at higher temperatures.
They are detritivores and feed primarily on decaying organic material. Their diet can be supplemented with a variety of leaves, fruit, vegetables, flowers and mushrooms, as well as suitable isopod or springtail foods.
Stats
This isopod requires more specific environmental conditions and consistent care, including maintaining the appropriate substrate moisture and ventilation. It is less tolerant of husbandry mistakes and is better suited to keepers with some experience.
22°C – 28°C
High Humidity
This species requires a consistently moist substrate throughout the enclosure. A moisture gradient is not strictly necessary.
Medium Ventilation
This species requires regular air movement and good air exchange while still retaining suitable humidity. Corner-to-corner ventilation is usually recommended.
Slow Growth Rate
This species matures slowly. Mancae typically develop into juveniles in 2–3 months, followed by a further 6–10 months to reach adulthood.
