Isopods are a fast growing hobby for South Africa. Ideally suited to those who want a non venomous terrarium species, or bioactive terrarium. Initially starting as a 'clean-up crew' isopods are emerging as a dedicated hobby with collectors looking for more exotic species.

There are a number of isopod vendors in South Africa. The number of species available in the South African hobby is growing.

Isopod Groups

Isopod communities are primarily WhatsApp and facebook groups.

Terrarium Enclosures

Beautiful acrylic terrariums really show off your isopods. Consider AraiTerra, we have used AraiTerra enclosures for years, and Henry provides exceptional support and is always happy to fix up any terrarium issues you might get. Henry also sells tarantulas, which can co-habit with some isopods quite nicely.

Other Isopod Vendors

Just because we are out of stock does not mean you can't get the isopod you want, if we are out of stock some other isopod vendors that we can recommend are isopodfarms, and EarthlyOasis. The quantity of isopod vendors in South Africa is growing, and shopping around is a good idea, as everyone has different stock and pricing can differ depending on specials. Other vendors with unusual species like Cubaris sp 'Cherry Blossom', are The Isopod Lady.

Springtails

Springtails are a must for any bioactive terrarium, and also help increase the health of your colony, cleaning up left over food, and debris. Normal springtails are white, but you can get a bit more adventurous, and get yellow or red or blue springtails too (not a good idea to mix them). For beautiful springtails chat to Elsabe at EarthlyOasis and Chris at Phyta Precision Substrates.
